Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) has gained popularity across many industries allowing greater durability and accuracy. Costs are reduced since there is no need for large crews, road closures, multiple machines, and restoration. HDD offers the flexibility needed for today’s utility projects, especially when pipes must be run under a driveway, road, culvert, sidewalk, river or wetlands. We recently installed a sanitary force main for a new apartment complex in Manchester, New Jersey, where the pipe ran along the shoulder of a road.
1. After calling 811 and the underground utilities were marked, we exposed the utilities.
This allows us to clear the bore path, which is vital to a job well done.
2. The drill is set up and we’re preparing to drill the pilot hole into the shoulder of the road.
3. Once the pilot hole was completed, the reamer was hooked up and now we are preparing to pull the HDPE pipe 400 feet.
4. We checked the water flow from the reamer as it was being pulled into the pit. It’s important to have good flow to force out the cuttings to allow ample room for the pipe to be pulled back through the bore hole. The transport of the cuttings was good, and we then began the pullback operation. The reamer exited the bore path and the pipe was in place.
At DVUC, we specialize in horizontal direction drilling for a variety of projects. With this project, we efficiently ran an HDPE pipe for the sanitary force main with minimal environmental and traffic disruption for a large residential complex.
